Northeast SARE Presents a Webinar on Applying for Farmer Grants
Northeast SARE is offering a free webinar on how to apply for a Farmer Grant. It is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2020 from noon to 1 p.m. Grant coordinator Candice Huber will provide an overview of the program and answer questions about Farmer Grant projects. She will be joined by NH farmer Jennifer Wilhelm (see project highlight below) who will share her experiences of applying for, receiving, and conducting Farmer Grant projects. The Schneider Group - an international topmaker and buyer of American wool overseas - is planning a virtual meeting concerning sustainability and would like to see wool producers from all around the world take part on Oct. 6-8. Megan and her husband Ryan have a grass-fed dairy operation in Western New York. Ryan is a second-generation dairy farmer who manages his family's 700 cow dairy. Megan is a full-time Ag Teacher who not only helps Ryan with all the miscellaneous items at the dairy but also runs a Berry/Fresh-Cut Flower business and is raising two young children.

The Coronavirus pandemic has created many challenges for small processors, but it has created many opportunities as well. Topics to be discussed include: 1.) Alternative meat sales channels that exist, and how companies in those channels have adapted to increased demand
2.) Expanding a producer customer base, as the shutdowns and reduced operations of the big packing plants have forced farmers to find alternate means to profit from their animals
3.) Finding a new consumer base, as companies that sold to the foodservice industry have to find new customers to replace the restaurants that have shut down or reduced their demand.

Farming is one of the most dangerous occupations in America, and farmers are nearly twice as likely to die on the job as police officers. In order to stay safe while farming, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County (CCEUC) will host an online workshop with New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health (NYCAMH), and Ashley Pierce (Owner and Operator of Home at Last Farm) as a guest speakers on October 15th , 2020 on the topic of mitigating the most common on farm injuries.
