Congratulations on being accepted into the Academy for Dairy Executives.  By now you should have received your acceptance letter with payment details.  The option to pay online was mentioned in the letter. The first installment is payable upon notification of acceptance into the program, no later than 11/14/17. For those that owe $375 you can pay by credit card at the link above.  You may mail your check to the address listed on your acceptance letter if you prefer.  For those that owe an amount other than $375, please send your check to the address listed on the letter.

The second installment is due by January 1, 2018. Some scholarships were available from our Platinum Sponsors.  More information will be coming on how to pay for the second installment.

A reminder that the program fee includes all meals, refreshment breaks, parking, meeting rooms, speaker fees, program materials, and lodging on the first night of each session. Additional lodging accommodations before or after the program are the responsibility of the participant. The fee does not include expenses associated with traveling to and from the facility, expenses for recreation and entertainment, or other personal incidental expenses.

Each session of the Academy begins at 11:30 am on day one with lunch and concludes on day two around 12:30 pm. A typical day includes individual study, small group discussions, informal networking, and roundtable discussions with faculty. With the fully-packed agenda and importance of group interaction to the program, participants are expected to spend the entire time at the Academy site.

Please be prepared to leave your business responsibilities at home. Break time will be built in to allow informal interaction with classmates and to respond to any urgent matters at home.

Sponsorship Notes
Since 2011, Cornell Cooperative Extension and PRO-DAIRY have teamed up to present the Academy for Dairy Executives around different regions of New York State. This year we will once again bring the program to Central New York.

The Academy for Dairy Executives offers participants the unique opportunity to discover and refine skills that are proven to be essential for well-rounded, high-performing dairy managers. The target audience for this program is individuals who are moving into management positions or have recently become managers on farms. The 2017-2018 class will consist of 20 to 30 dairy producers from across the Central New York region and beyond. Participants attending the Academy will participate in three in-depth seminars on December 12-13, 2017 in Hamilton, NY, January 23-24, 2018 in Auburn, NY and February 20-21, 2018 in Oneonta, NY.

The Academy focuses on many areas of high-performance management, including financial assessment, budgeting, decision-making, building effective employee teams, family business management and communication, business risk management, and strategic planning. During each seminar participants will have the opportunity to interact and build relationships with dairy managers from across the region and interact with the speakers on an informal basis. Speakers will include Cornell Cooperative Extension educators, PRO-DAIRY specialists and invited industry guests.

Industry support is a key component to the success of this program and we invite your business to partner with the Academy for Dairy Executives. Your financial contribution as a dairy industry leader enables dairy managers to further improve their management and leadership skills at a more attractive cost, while being recognized as an integral part of this dynamic program.

Cash Rent and Custom Harvest Survey

To date, there is limited information available about rental rates and fees for crop harvesting.  Farms can use this valuable information for their farm business planning to help improve decision making and profitability.

The data that is collected, and the subsequent reports/findings/resources will be helpful for all of us to answer that call of "What's the average rental rate in my area?" and "How much do people charge to combine oats?"

Take the survey here.

Farmers Can Join MeatSuite For Free!

MeatSuite.com is a free resource provided by Cornell University where NY meat farmers can create a farm profile and list their bulk (wholes, halves, quarters) and bundled (i.e. Grilling Bundle) meat products.

Why should farmers join?

1. It's free and easy!
2. Connect with more local customers. In the past year the MeatSuite.com farm directory had 8,300 visits from New York consumers. Farm profiles get as many as 25 views per month from potential local customers. We also spotlight MeatSuite farms on social media and bring attention and purchases to farms through highlights and giveaways.

How do I join?

Farmers can visit https://www.meatsuite.com/farmers/ to create a free farm profile. You must list at least one product for your farm's profile to go live. You'll also have access to Cornell's free Meat Price Calculator, a helpful tool for pricing your meat to make a profit.

While you're on MeatSuite, check out the "Creating Consumer-Friendly Bulk Meats" publication on the log-in page. It has tips on how to create bulk meat products that are easier for first-time buyers to say "yes" to.

If you have any questions as you create your farm profile or products, we're here to help! Please email Matt LeRoux at mnl28@cornell.edu.

Spotted Lanternfly

Lycorma delicatula, or Spotted Lanternfly (SLF), is an invasive plant hopper from Asia and is an agricultural pest. In the United States, it was first found in Pennsylvania in 2014. Spotted Lanternfly has been found in New York State on Staten Island, all New York City boroughs, Long Island, Port Jervis, Sloatsburg, Orangeburg, Ithaca, Binghamton, Middletown, Newburgh, Highland, and the Buffalo area. SLF threatens the agriculture and forestry industries, and is also a nuisance pest. The nymphs and adults feed on over 70 different plants, but is especially detrimental to grapes, a black walnut, hops, maple trees and apples. New York State Ag and Markets supported CCE efforts to help bring awareness to communities and we developed this Public Service Announcement and would appreciate you sharing it with your member lists.
