Virtual: Determining Whether or Not Your Animal is Ready to Harvest

Guest Speaker: Mackenzie Waro, Meat Buyer for Meyer Foods

As we quickly approach the fall season most of our livestock producers are eager to harvest their animals that they have been raising for the past 6 months to a year. This year there has been more of a bottle neck then previously due to the pandemic and concern of a meat shortage. There have been quite a few questions regarding how to determine if this project that was started is truly finished or needs more time on feed to get the most out of your animal. Please join us for an in depth workshop on determining if your animal is ready to be harvested or if you should keep on feed a few months longer. We will also discuss the target weight for each of the species- Lamb, goats, beef and swine.

Local CCE Educators Mariane Kiraly, David Cox, Nicole Tommell, Laura Basillio and Jim Barber have partnered to offer "To Market, To Market," a six-part series to be held virtually and in-person at five regional locations to make your learning experience comfortable, safe, and flexible. Participants will learn how to develop and screen an idea, analyze current trends, develop a budget, consider cash flow, determine pricing, manage marketing and distribution, access funding, test a prototype, consider legalities, manage risk, navigate regulations, and much more. A logical, process-oriented curriculum will lead to dynamic business plans that create new economic opportunities in the region.

Virtual: Design Your Succession Plan

How will your family farm operate in the future when the owner retires or is gone? Are you currently working with another generation who may be questioning their role in the future of the farm or are you yourself questioning your current role?

To help NYS farm families start their succession planning process, Cornell Cooperative Extension educators will be utilizing a new interactive program designed by North Dakota State University Extension, Design Your Succession Plan. This program will provide tools and resources for producers who want to begin the succession planning process.

Virtual: Dairy Feeder School (English & Spanish)

The Online Feeder School is a 2-part educational program for farmers, employees, and agriservice professionals who work as or with the feeder -the person responsible for mixing TMR, maintaining bunk silos, and communicating with other farm staff. It will cover monitoring dry matter, feed bunk management, bunk face management, and troubleshooting mixer wagons.

November 3rd and 5th are English webinars.

Virtual: Pork Quality Assurance Training

We are pleased to offer a Pork Quality Assurance training remotely for any swine producer's. This certification is required for quite a lot of GAP certifications and contracts. "The program was modeled after the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) programs used by food manufacturers to ensure the safety of food products but was customized for on-farm use. PQA has expanded and improved over the years based on scientific advancements and recommendations of technology and animal agriculture experts. In 2007, the program's name changed to PQA Plus? to reflect the merging of two other education programs into one comprehensive instructional program. Today, it covers a spectrum of topics related to food safety and animal well-being. New features have been added, such as on-farm site assessments, detailed animal care components as well as environmental protection and worker safety."- Pork Council.

Cash Rent and Custom Harvest Survey

To date, there is limited information available about rental rates and fees for crop harvesting.  Farms can use this valuable information for their farm business planning to help improve decision making and profitability. 

The data that is collected, and the subsequent reports/findings/resources will be helpful for all of us to answer that call of "What's the average rental rate in my area?" and "How much do people charge to combine oats?"



Farmers Can Join MeatSuite For Free!

MeatSuite.com is a free resource provided by Cornell University where NY meat farmers can create a farm profile and list their bulk (wholes, halves, quarters) and bundled (i.e. Grilling Bundle) meat products.

Why should farmers join?

1. It's free and easy!
2. Connect with more local customers. In the past year the MeatSuite.com farm directory had 8,300 visits from New York consumers. Farm profiles get as many as 25 views per month from potential local customers. We also spotlight MeatSuite farms on social media and bring attention and purchases to farms through highlights and giveaways.

How do I join?

Farmers can visit https://www.meatsuite.com/farmers/ to create a free farm profile. You must list at least one product for your farm's profile to go live. You'll also have access to Cornell's free Meat Price Calculator, a helpful tool for pricing your meat to make a profit.

While you're on MeatSuite, check out the "Creating Consumer-Friendly Bulk Meats" publication on the log-in page. It has tips on how to create bulk meat products that are easier for first-time buyers to say "yes" to.

Spotted Lanternfly

Lycorma delicatula, or Spotted Lanternfly (SLF), is an invasive plant hopper from Asia and is an agricultural pest. In the United States, it was first found in Pennsylvania in 2014. Spotted Lanternfly has been found in New York State on Staten Island, all New York City boroughs, Long Island, Port Jervis, Sloatsburg, Orangeburg, Ithaca, Binghamton, Middletown, Newburgh, Highland, and the Buffalo area. SLF threatens the agriculture and forestry industries, and is also a nuisance pest. The nymphs and adults feed on over 70 different plants, but is especially detrimental to grapes, a black walnut, hops, maple trees and apples. New York State Ag and Markets supported CCE efforts to help bring awareness to communities and we developed this Public Service Announcement and would appreciate you sharing it with your member lists.
